On March 13 a memorial cherry tree was planted in the garden at SCZC in memory of the late Kobun Chino Otogawa Roshi, who founded the SCZC in the late 1970s.
Wendy Johnson, master gardener, has trained at Green Gulch. She and Katherine Thanas led the dedication. We offered incense, chanted and planted the tree. Ellen Richter, one of Kobun's earliest students, spoke about the early days of Kobun's arrival and the community that formed around him.
The cherry tree is one of "three friends" in Japanese gardens. The cherry tree represents beauty and the end of beauty.Cherry trees in the area blossom in early Feb, about the time of Kobun's birthday, Feb 1.
You are welcome to visit and enjoy the tree and our garden at 113 School Street any time.
