In the zendo. Yoshihito Shibata, the instructor, has been studying calligraphy since the age of 5 and currently teaches calligraphy and martial arts at UCSC. His aptitude for the art has brought him prizes in national competitions.

No experience is necessary . Fee is $75 for the entire session plus materials. Or, $20 per drop in class. Pre enrollment and payment is highly recommended. Register at 457-0206

Materials needed for the practice of Japanese Calligraphy:

Fude: brush - small and medium
Shitajiki: felt mat, approx 20x24"
Sumi: ink stick
Suzuri: ink stone
Bunchin: paperweight
Hanshi: calligraphy paper (if taking all four classes the 100 sheet pack is recommended)
(Fudeoki: brush holder)
(Mizusashi: water holder)

Items in () are not required for the class.

Except for the felt mat, all items are available at LenzArts in Santa Cruz Felt can be purchased at a fabric store. Your instructor will have 100 sheet packs available for $3.00.
